Maranta leuconeura ‘Kerchoveana’

By far our most popular plants and it’s easy to see why. Bow down to this holy wonder! Prayer Plants are huge show offs, by day their leaves lay flat and by night they fold up as if in prayer (take a look at the pictures – I finally caught one in the act with good enough light to photograph it!). It’s leaves have the loveliest markings. It’s such a beauty; and it’ll clean the air too. It also has the sweetest white flowers.

Light

Your Prayer Plant is no sun worshipper. Best to house it in light shade. In the winter months you might want to bring it into some more light but keep those pretty leaves out of direct sunlight as they can fade or scorch.

Water

Keeping the soil moist will keep your Prayer Plant at its best. Don’t let it sit in water/soggy soil. You can let the top of the start to dry out before you water it but don’t let it get completely dry. Water less often in winter.

Humidity

Prayer Plants hail from the Brazilian jungle so they LOVE moisture. You can keep her in your bathroom or perhaps group it with other plants. A mister will help to keep her happy and healthy. Mist with tepid/warm water to recreate that jungle vibe.

Temperature

Don’t let your Prayer Plant get cold. They like it warm. Anything above 16 degrees is fine. Avoid giving your Prayer Plant a chill by keeping her away from draughts.

Food

Prayer Plants will fare just fine without extra food but you can treat her to a monthly meal of diluted fertiliser if you fancy.

Toxicity

Pet friendly so a great addition to your menagerie.

Dimensions 12 × 20 cm

HELP! There’s something wrong with my Prayer Plant!

The leaves aren’t doing their thing. If your plant’s leaves aren’t closing in the evening, maybe she’s sitting too close to a light source. Try keeping her in natural light to witness her in all her splendor.

Yellow or brown leaves, or leaves curling up are signs of underwatering or too much light. Try adjusting your watering schedule, step up the misting or putting her in a more shady place. If this doesn’t work try watering with filtered water.

One of my favourite plants. Love how it closes up at night and then opens up in the morning. So pretty too. Love it!

So happy I managed to get one of the Tricolour Prayer Plants. The photos just don’t do it justice. The colours and patterns on the leaves are just beautiful. I would highly recommend getting one.
