Lipstick Plant – Rasta

This might be the most interesting looking lipstick plant. It’s got a real hoya carnosa compacta vibe about it but in a more delicate way. The ‘ropes’ are so long and luscious and I was super stoked to see some flowers on these lovelies already. They get their name from the ‘lipstick’ blooms. She was so long I struggled to get her into the picture!

Light : If you want to see some flowers then this one needs some nice bright light. As beautiful as variegation is, it does mean that your plant will need a little more light. The variegation is a lack of chlorophyll and plants need chlorophyll to live, so she will need lots of light. I would avoid strong direct afternoon sun so just a bright spot will see her thrive.

Water: Overwatering it pretty easy for this plant so err on the side of caution. Don’t let her sit in soggy soil and only water when the top of the soil starts to dry out. You could always sit your lipstick plant in a tray of water and let it soak up water from the bottom.

Humidity: She will appreciate a humid environment so you can mist her regularly, or group her with other plants or sit her in a bathroom or kitchen.

Temperature: This plant likes to keep warm. She’s not frost tolerant so make sure temps don’t dip below 10 degrees, if you want her to thrive then keeping her toasty at 18 degrees + will be best.

Food:  You can feed with diluted fertiliser in the spring and summer months.
